A wavelength locker is an essential photonic circuit for precisely controlling the wavelength of tunable laser diodes (TLDs) used in coherent communications, creating demand for a more compact and simpler approach. For the III-V/Si heterogeneous integrated TLDs we have demonstrated, we previously proposed a monolithically integrable wavelength locker that requires no heater control, using a 90° hybrid circuit and monitoring different photodiodes depending on the target wavelength. In this work, we propose a wavelength monitoring algorithm based on the principle of coherent detection that eliminates the need to switch between photodiodes. We also report the demonstration of its operation using a 120° hybrid circuit, which reduces the number of photodiodes compared with the 90° hybrid.
