Greetings

On behalf of the SSDM Committees, it is my great pleasure to welcome all of you to the 2026 International Conference on Solid State Devices and Materials (SSDM2026), to be held from September 14 to 17, 2026, in Nagasaki, Japan. Since its inception in 1969, SSDM has served as one of the leading international conferences, providing a vital forum for active discussions among academia, industry, and government on a wide range of cutting-edge research topics related to solid-state devices and materials, from interdisciplinary domains to emerging fields.

This year, we received 587 abstract submissions from 14 countries and regions around the world. After a rigorous peer review process by the Program Committee, 277 papers were selected for oral presentations, and 163 papers for short oral and poster presentations.

Two Short Courses will be offered on September 14:

  •  “Innovative ULSI Technologies toward Advanced AI Era,” organized by Dr. Toshifumi Irisawa (AIST)
  •  “Frontiers and Future Prospects of Semiconductor Quantum Technologies,” organized by Prof. Akira Oiwa (The Univ. of Osaka).

Both courses will feature valuable insights and technical knowledge delivered by leading experts from academia and industry.

A Special Talk titled “The NVIDIA Playbook: Computing, AI, and the Road Ahead” will be presented by Mr. Masataka Osaki (NVIDIA) following the Short Courses on September 14. This session will provide an opportunity for all attendees to discuss the future of “Solid State Devices and Materials” in the AI co-creative era.

The technical sessions begin on September 15 with a Plenary Session, including the SSDM Award Ceremony. We are honored to host three distinguished plenary speakers:

  • Dr. Julien Ryckaert (imec): “CMOS 2.0: The Vertical Turn in Scaling”
  • Dr. Yoshihisa Kagawa (Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation): “Prospects of 3D Integrated CMOS Image Sensors”
  • Dr. Heike Riel (IBM Research): “Quantum Computing – Toward Large-Scale Fault-Tolerance”

Following the Plenary Session, regular sessions will take place over three days, covering 12 technical areas aligned with the SSDM2026 scope. The program includes 54 invited talks, 407 contributed presentations, and 21 late-news presentations. A Poster Session will be held in the late afternoon of September 16, immediately after the parallel short oral sessions for posters.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all the contributors for sharing their latest research results and ideas that make SSDM2026 such a stimulating and exciting event. As AI continues to evolve at a breathtaking pace, solid-state devices and materials have become the essential platform underlying this ongoing transformation. Across diverse domains — from high-performance computing to quantum information, photonics, and spintronics — technologies are advancing rapidly, positioning SSDM at the very forefront of these breakthroughs. The innovations presented at SSDM span a wide range of disciplines, driving progress not only in digital infrastructure but also in secure living and sustainable social development in the AI co-creative era. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, SSDM continues to play a vital role in shaping a better future for all.
