質量分析に代表される様々な分析技術を用い、ヒト生体試料の解析に端を発する新規のヒューマンバイオロジー解明と、それに基づく創薬研究を進めている。エーザイにおいては、現在ワシントン大学医学部が主導する優性遺伝アルツハイマーネットワーク試験ユニット（DIAN-TU）が実施する優性遺伝アルツハイマー病に対する臨床第Ⅱ/Ⅲ相試験において評価中の抗MTBR（Microtubule binding region: 微小管結合領域）タウ抗体：E2814を含む、神経変性疾患を対象とする創薬トランスレーショナル研究をリードしている。企業研究に加えて、ワシントン大学におけるアカデミア研究も行っており、アルツハイマー病及び原発性タウオパチーのバイオマーカーおよび発症機構についてトランスレーショナル研究を進めている。近年、血漿及び脳脊髄液中の特定のタウ種が、アルツハイマー病及び原発性タウオパチーの指標となり得ることを見いだし1-3、薬剤臨床開発への応用を展開中である。

Edward B. Lee, M.D., Ph.D. is the John Q. Trojanowski, M.D., Ph.D. Professor for Neurodegenerative Disease Research at the University of Pennsylvania, where he serves as Director of the Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research, Co-Director of the Institute on Aging, and Associate Director of the Penn Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Stanford, he earned his M.D. and Ph.D. from Penn and completed training in Anatomic Pathology and Neuropathology.
Dr. Lee’s research focuses on Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia (FTD), ALS, and trauma-related neurodegeneration. He has made seminal contributions to understanding TDP-43 dysfunction in FTD/ALS, discovering vacuolar tauopathy linked to VCP mutations, annexin A11 and TDP-43 co-aggregates in FTD, and developing cryo-electron tomography for human brain tissue. An attending neuropathologist at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, he has authored more than 250 publications, serves on multiple journal editorial boards, chairs the NIH CMND/CMN study section, and is deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists and physician-scientists.

[IL2]Dementia with Lewy Bodies: Recent Advances and Future Directions

John O'Brien

John O’Brien is Professor of Old Age Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, having previously been Professor of Old Age Psychiatry in Newcastle. He is also a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Emeritus Senior Investigator, a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and former National Specialty Lead for Dementia. He is a member of national and international guideline and consensus groups, including those of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the European Stroke Association. He is a Steering Committee member of the European DLB Consortium and a member of the International Consortium for DLB Executive.
His research interests include the use of neuroimaging as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in dementia and the diagnosis and management of Lewy body and vascular dementias. He was Chief Investigator on the DIAMOND-Lewy Programme seeking to improve the diagnosis and management of Lewy body dementia.

[IL3]Alzheimer's Drug Development: Progress, Lessons, and Future Directions

Szofia S. Bullain

Dr. Szofia S. Bullain is a physician-scientist, drug development executive, and board-certified geriatric neurologist with more than two decades of experience spanning academia, clinical practice, and the biopharmaceutical industry. She currently serves as Vice President of Clinical Development at Biogen, where she oversees clinical development efforts within the Alzheimer's and Dementia Development Unit. Prior to joining Biogen in 2023, Dr. Bullain held several senior leadership roles in late-stage Alzheimer's disease drug development at F. Hoffmann–La Roche in Basel, Switzerland.
Before transitioning to industry, Dr. Bullain was a faculty member in the Department of Neurology at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine. She conducted clinical research at the UCI Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) and served as an investigator for The 90+ Study, one of the world's leading longitudinal studies of aging and dementia in the oldest-old.
Originally from Budapest, Hungary, Dr. Bullain earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Semmelweis University and a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) in Pharmaceutical Medicine from the University of Basel. She completed a five-year translational neuroscience research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, followed by a neurology residency and a four-year fellowship in Geriatric Neurology at the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. Bullain's work focuses on the clinical development of therapies for Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative disorders, drawing on her experience across academic research, clinical medicine, and pharmaceutical development.

Dr. Yi-Wei Chang is an Associate Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics and Associate Director of the Institute of Structural Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. His laboratory specializes the use of cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) to visualize macromolecular machines directly inside cells at molecular resolution. By capturing biological structures in their native cellular environment, his work reveals how complex assemblies drive fundamental processes such as neurodegenerative diseases and host-pathogen interactions.
Dr. Chang’s research has uncovered key molecular machines that power secretion and invasion in apicomplexan parasites, providing structural insight into diseases such as malaria, toxoplasmosis, and cryptosporidiosis. His group also develops new technological and computational advances that expand cryo-ET into increasingly complex systems, including human brain tissue. Through integrative cellular structural biology, his lab bridges fundamental mechanism and translational opportunity, uncovering structural principles that inform the next generation of therapeutic strategies.

筑波大学名誉教授、認知神経科学会理事長、東京科学大学（旧：東京医科歯科大学）客員教授、医療法人社団創知会理事長。甲府市立病院、山梨医科大学、国立精神・医療研究病院（旧：精神・神経センター武蔵病院）などを経て、2001年に筑波大学臨床医学系神医学教授。認知症の臨床と画像研究に携わる。わが国の初の認知症患者調査の責任者として平成23年当時の全国の総数を462万人と発表した。
