“Thermal and photothermal reverse water-gas shift reaction using oxygen-deficient molybdenum oxide catalysts” (9:30~10:00)
Yasutaka KUWAHARA, The University of Osaka
The reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction is a promising route for CO2 utilization. In this presentation, I will showcase the development of high-performance RWGS catalysts utilizing Mo oxides. When combined with Pt nanoparticles, Mo(V) oxides enable reversible redox reactions, resulting in excellent activity and selectivity in the RWGS reaction. Furthermore, reduced Mo suboxides exhibit excellent photothermal conversion properties and can be utilized in light-driven RWGS reactions.
“Applications of sustainable chemical transformation using photocatalysis” (11:15~11:45)
Kazuya NAKATA, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology
Photocatalysis is a promising technology for sustainable chemistry. This presentation introduces our recent advances in the design of photocatalytic systems that address two complementary strategies: "upgrading" for value-added synthesis and "controlled degradation." In the upgrading strategy, we have investigated topics such as the valorization of abundant biomass. We have established a systematic methodology for synthesizing various rare sugars—valuable as pharmaceutical and functional food ingredients—from common saccharides. In the controlled degradation strategy, we have pursued efforts such as the development of a photo-switchable biodegradable polymer that is stable under illumination but degrades in the dark. These achievements are expected to contribute to green chemistry, smart materials, and environmental remediation, among other fields.
“Development of catalyst materials utilizing metal suboxides”(13:15~13:45)
Ryoichi OTOMO, Hokkaido University
Metal oxides are widely used as catalyst materials for various chemical reactions due to their excellent thermal and mechanical stability and their ability to exhibit acid-base and redox properties in the solid state. However, most of the metal oxides used have been those with the most stable oxidation states. We are engaged in research aimed at “synthesis of metal oxides with meta-stable oxidation states and developing their catalytic functions.” Here, I will present our research to date, focusing primarily on titanium suboxides.
「Tailoring cyclic olefin copolymers and terpolymers via transition metal catalysis: from macromolecular design to functional applications」(10:45~11:30)
SCITEC-CNR Losio Simona
Cyclic olefin copolymers (COCs) are thermoplastic materials composed of a cyclic olefin - typically norbornene- and ethylene, generally synthesized via metallocene catalysts. Recent developments focus on copolymerizing cyclic olefins with propylene or higher olefins to achieve novel materials with enhanced optical, thermal, chemical, and mechanical properties. The introduction of a third termonomer into the polymer backbone allows for the design of polymeric materials that combine the high thermal stability of cyclic units with improved impact strength and toughness. These results including microstructural analysis will be introduced in the symposium.
