The rapid increase in the number of patients with dementia and mild cognitive impairment has resulted in higher medical costs, added burdens on families and communities, and various disruptions in social life, making it a significant social issue today. In dentistry, oral hypofunction and frailty have become social problems, and the relationship between oral and cognitive function has been reported, suggesting that maintaining oral function may play an important role in preventing cognitive decline. Previous studies have indicated that greater brain activation in the prefrontal cortex is associated with greater benefits from cognitive training. Although adding cognitive function elements to oral function training may promote the activation of brain activity in the prefrontal cortex during oral function training, the effects have not been validated.
We combined oral function training with game-based cognitive training that includes elements of so-called “brain training” to create a prototype of “cognitive and oral function training” as exercise gaming that attempts to improve both oral and cognitive functions. We examined the effects of developed training in a double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT) on elderly subjects and found that different types and combinations of training can improve different cognitive functions.
