To maintain the vitality of the aging population, infrared sensors in photonic integrated circuits can identify disease markers in breath compounds. Our sensor uses cavity-ring-down spectroscopy and requires a polarization rotator to eliminate unwanted wavelength peaks for detecting gas concentrations in the ppm range. Most existing polarization rotators are currently not integrable yet.
To achieve a polarization extinction ratio over 10 dB required for efficient breath sensing, this manuscript studies the length dependency of a nano-pixel polarization rotator constituted with two regions in regard to its performances: TE and TM converters. Using 3-dimensionals-Finite Difference Time Domain analysis, we achieved a 4.34 μm × 0.96 μm polarization rotation region with 35 dB polarization extinction ratio and 7.5 dB excess loss.
