Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, especially transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), offer a unique combination of electronic, optical, and mechanical properties, attracting a wide range of research attention. Thus, a variety of molecular systems such as neutral benzyl viologen (BV0) has been used to functionalize 2D TMDCs via non-covalent or covalent interactions, due to the incompatibility of TMDCs with current doping techniques, which can cause fatal flaws in the 2D crystal. Although BV0 proved an effective dopant through the charge transfer accompanied by the two-electron redox reductions at the interface formed with TMDCs, the effect of monovalent benzyl viologen (BV+) as an intermediate product therein has not been investigated. Therefore, this study focused on the interaction between BV+ and TMDCs (i.e., MoS2), where a high-concentration BV+ solution was successfully prepared via forced electron supply achieved by electrochemical reactions, and was applied to electronic state modulation of MoS2.
