The simultaneous spread of incompatible rumors, such as fake news and their corrections, or opinions supporting and criticizing a particular political party, has been observed everywhere. Theoretical studies on the spread of rumors have been conducted using infection models. In this study, we employ the competitive SIS model to study the situation in which incompatible rumors spread simultaneously. For the competitive SIS model in well-mixed populations, it is found that in a realistic parameter domain, rumors do not coexist.
When the competitive SIS model is extended to networks, dynamics differ from those observed in well-mixed populations. Notably, in networks with community structures, different rumors can dominate in each community, and rumors coexist as a whole. Randomness of networks leads to evolutionary stability of rumors. Therefore, the echo chamber phenomenon emerges spontaneously when running the model on a network with the specific structure.
