We have shown that inhalation of radon, a common gaseous α-particle emitter that is a descendant of uranium, enhances antioxidant functions in mouse organs and suppresses damage caused by oxidative stress. In this study, we compared the effects of continuous and divided inhalation of thoron, a radioisotope of radon, on the severity of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. For example, the colitis index (DAI score) increased depending on the number of days that had passed, but in the case of continuous inhalation, it was significantly decreased on the second day and significantly increased on the sixth day compared to divided inhalation. This indicates that continuous inhalation of thoron has an earlier inhibitory effect on colitis than divided inhalation.
