Geopolymers (GP) can adsorb and retain cations such as metal ions internally even when exposed to water. On the other hand, since GP cannot adsorb and retain anions such as chlorine, radioactive anions such as Cl-36 will be eluted when exposed to water. Therefore, it cannot be used to solidify waste containing anions. Thus we investigated the ability to immobilize anions by using the heat-contractility of GP. When we chlorine-containing incineration ash selected as the simulated waste and heated GP containing the ash, the volume shrank and correspondingly the chlorine desorption distribution coefficient was improved. We suppose this improvement is due to reduction of the open pores inside GP that water can penetrate, suppressing the elution.
