The Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) is a technology that cuts steel using a high-speed jet of water with abrasives, inherently preventing blade damage from material biting. With a track record of cutting a 100mm thick plate, it was chosen for opening the PEM shell. To ensure reliable cutting and minimize damage to overpack and buffer, the jetting posture was set from the front of the PEM to an oblique side direction. This posture aims to cut both the front and side steel plates simultaneously, opening the front of the PEM and directing the jet flow outward from the side. This report presents AWJ tests on specimens simulating the cutting section, consisting of two steel plates with buffer sandwiched between them.
