Currently, development of cancer drugs using various radionuclides is underway, and astatine-211 (211At), an alpha-ray nuclide, is a promising candidate nuclide. We are developing a 211At separation and recovery system using the “Aerosol method”, The Bi target containing 211At is heated in which produced by nuclear transmutation by an accelerator, and the vaporized 211At is attached to aerosol particles and collected by a filter. The results of the development are outlined, and a concept for the future practical use of 211At is also reported. We are currently developing a technology to separate and recover 211At from the target after irradiation. We are aiming for the practical application of At pharmaceuticals with this technology as the key. First, a system that can supply At for clinical trials will be established, and once a stable supply is realized and the drug market is established, a strategy to establish a large-scale manufacturing base and mass supply is envisioned.
