The adhesion degradation of a protective layer in the liquid blanket is one of the issues due to the thermal stress at the interface of the layer and substrate during operation and shutdown. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the effect of thermal cycling on the adhesion of the protective α-Al2O3 layer formed on Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) FeCrAl alloys. ODS FeCrAl alloy specimens pre-oxidized at 1273 K were performed thermal cycling tests from 323 to 1173 K for 5 and 50 cycles. The crack in the α-Al2O3 layer and the exfoliation were not recognized by STEM/EDX analysis. The relationship between the adhesion in the shear direction and the roughness of the layer-substrate interface was also clarified.
