SYNROC is a promising waste form for immobilizing high-level radioactive waste and actinides (An). However, for engineering applications, there are issues of high sintering temperature and long sintering time. The authors have been exploring the use of spark plasma sintering (SPS) method as a low-temperature, rapid synthesis technique for SYNROC. While SPS method offers various advantages, the sintering behavior may vary depending on factors such as the die material and oxygen partial pressure. In this study, Ce was used as a simulant of An, and the phase status of SYNROC wasteform was investigated and compared between SPS sintering and equilibrium experiment at the composition of zirconolite (CaZrTi2O7), perovskite (CaTiO3) and CeO2 mixture.
