Underwater laser cutting has been selected as the primary method for dismantling the reactor area of “Fugen.” Since there are limited application records of laser cutting in reactor decommissioning, mock-up tests have been conducted to obtain basic cutting data, verify the developed technology, and identify issues for practical application. In FY2025, underwater laser cutting tests were performed on calandria tubes and control rod guide tubes made of Zircaloy-2, which are structural materials of Fugen. The tests evaluated the cutting behavior and cutting conditions for Zircaloy-2. As a result, instability during laser cutting, considered to be characteristic of Zircaloy-2, was observed, indicating the need for further verification.
