General Information: 37th JASID Annual Conference
This year’s annual conference is scheduled to take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 November at the University of Tokyo’s Komaba I Campus.
1. Theme
The path of development, the future of cooperation: What Lies Ahead for International Development Cooperation in a Shifting World Order
The world now stands at a major turning point. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is dragging on, whilst a severe humanitarian crisis continues in Gaza. Furthermore, the military tensions and exchange of attacks between the United States, Israel and Iran, as well as the US-China trade dispute triggered by Trump’s tariffs, are destabilizing global security and the economy, extending beyond the Middle East and bilateral conflicts. The international order established after the Second World War, along with principles such as multilateralism and the rule of law, have been severely shaken, and divisions within the international community are deepening. Against this global backdrop, the theme of the 37th National Conference is ‘The Path of Development, the Future of Cooperation’. The time has come to take stock of what has been achieved, by whom, and what changes have been brought about in the name of ‘development’ to date, whilst also re-examining the path of development itself. At the same time, we are called upon to envisage new forms of ‘cooperation’ that cannot be fully captured by the traditional frameworks of inter-state aid or support from developed to developing countries. What can we learn from modern-day Asia and Japan, where peace and stability have been the cornerstones of prosperity, and what should we strive for? This year, as the Asian Development Bank marks its 60th anniversary, it represents a symbolic milestone for reflecting on the history of post-war development and looking ahead to the future of international cooperation, both in terms of its institutional framework and practical implementation. We aim to make this conference a forum where we can freely discuss the possibilities for future cooperation, whilst critically building on our past experiences of development. We look forward to your active participation and hope to see lively and open-minded discussions that transcend existing frameworks.
