Hiroshima Institute of Plate Convergence Region Research (HiPeR) is a research center that has been certified as “Centers of Excellence” in Hiroshima University. The staff of the Department of Earth and Planetary Systems, Hiroshima University play a central role in promoting active joint research and educational activities.

Different important geoscientific phenomena caused by the dynamic processes are occurring frequently and actively at the plate convergence areas on the Earth. HiPeR (Hiroshima Institute of Plate Convergence Region Research) aims to have comprehensive understanding on these important phenomena, dividing them into three major processes of strategic research. These include “deep circulation of rocks and water”, “process and mechanism of fault movements” and “processes of magma generation”. We are aiming to carry out three-pronged research activities including “experiments”, “instrument-based observations” and “fieldwork-based observations”, which would help us to achieve the unified goal of better understanding of plate convergence area materials and events. Research Projects
These studies are carried out in each research project that specializes in each satellite and sensor as well as in cooperation with the combined use of satellite data and models. The results are reflected in future development of satellites.

ALOS Research and Application Project conducts the Earth science / application researches using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and high-resolution optical sensors onboard the "DAICHI" (ALOS) series satellites. ALOS Research and Application Project

GPM project conducts the Earth science / application researches and calibration & validation in the field of precipitation and water cycle using the precipitation radar onboard earth observation satellites. The precipitation radar enables observation of three-dimensional structure of rain and snow. GPM Project

GCOM-W project is conducting the Earth science / application researches and calibration & validation activities related to climate and water cycle variations using the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) series. GCOM-W Project AMSR Series

GCOM-C project is conducting the Earth science / application researches and calibration & validation related to climate change using the Second generation GLobal Imager (SGLI) onboard earth observation satellite "SHIKISAI" (GCOM-C). GCOM-C Project

GOSAT project is conducting research and development and data calibration & validation by using sensors onboard the "IBUKI" (GOSAT) series satellites for observing greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane) which are the causes of global warming. GOSAT Project

EarthCARE is an earth observation satellite mission that Japan and Europe are collaborating for development. It is expected that the mission will improve the numerical climate model and contribute to improving the accuracy of climate change prediction. EarthCARE Project

CATHODYNE ~CL stage for optical microscope~
 
Cathodyne® is an automated stage for an optical microscope to observe CL images. The software will control a sample stage and can stabilize an electron gun during observation. The electron beam can be stable during observation. Since the observation window is lead-free, CL light is weakened or cut off at certain wavelengths. Radiated X-rays are shielded by a patented objective lens cover.

Science of Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes

 

Project Overview
Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Many earthquakes occur every year, and it is considered that a huge earthquake could occur in the Nankai Trough or directly under the Tokyo metropolitan area in the near future. However, despite the efforts of seismologists, useful forecasts of earthquakes have proved elusive.
The recently discovered phenomenon of slow earthquakes has attracted scientific attention because it may fundamentally change our understanding of earthquakes. During an earthquake, underground rock ruptures quickly, radiating strong seismic waves that shake the ground. During slow earthquakes, the underground rock also ruptures, but slowly, so the shaking is very weak, sufficiently weak that these earthquakes have been overlooked until this century, with the development of highly sensitive instrumentation for seismic detection. Research during the last two decades has discovered slow earthquakes in various regions worldwide and has established some of their characteristics. However, their relationship to the occurrence of huge earthquakes, a topic of paramount concern, is not well understood. Therefore, we have launched a research project to broaden and deepen our understanding of earthquakes ranging from slow earthquakes to fast (ordinary) earthquakes. This is a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research Project [Grant-in-Aid for Transformative Research Areas (A)] of MEXT, Japan, entitled “The Science of Slow-to-Fast Earthquakes”. 
 
Research Groups
Researchers from various fields will participate in this research area. In addition to seismologists, scientists with specific experience in slow earthquake investigation will be involved in this project, including studies of geodesy using GPS and other instruments, geology and geochemistry to understand the materials in places where earthquakes occur, and basic physics to clarify the laws of friction and fracture. In addition, engineering researchers who are developing new observation techniques and researchers in information science and statistics with expertise in data science will also newly participate. To enable these researchers from various fields to collaborate effectively, six planned research subgroups have been established in the research area (below figure). These are the A01 Physicochemical Processes Group, A02 Structural Anatomy Group, A03 International Comparison Group, B01 New Technology Observation Group, B02 Information Science Group, and B03 Modeling and Forecast Group. In addition, we are calling for publicly offered research proposals every two years. Approximately 100 researchers, and many students who will lead the next generation of scientists, will work within this five-year-long research project to understand both slow and fast earthquakes and better forecast their future occurrence.

The Institute for Planetary Materials, Okayama University is located in Misasa, Tottori Prefecture, a town that is well-known for its hot spring. The mission of the institute is to promote research and education on the origin, evolution and dynamics of the Earth and planets, with constant development of comprehensive geochemical analyses system, a range of high-pressure facilities and spectroscopic equipments. As a joint-use research institute, we provide joint-use and collaborative research opportunities on the research infrastructure and technologies to domestic and overseas researchers and students. ◆Organization and Research Activities
Division for Basic Planetary Materials Science
We aim at understanding the internal structure and evolution of the Earth and planets via determination of the structure and physical properties of earth/planetary materials using experimental and computational approaches.

Division for Planetary System
We aim at understanding the origin, evolution and dynamics of the Earth and planets by utilizing a comprehensive analytical system that includes a variety of facilities for highly accurate/precise quantitative analysis, mass spectroscopic analysis and spectroscopic analysis.
-Development and application of highly precise elementary analytical method and mass spectrometry.

Division for Astrobiology
We investigate mineral–organic–fluid interactions, origin of life on the Earth and planets and traces of primitive life in the solar system via both experiment and analytical approaches.
◆Joint Usage / Research Center
The Institute for Planetary Materials has been designated as a Join Usage/Research Center, “Research Core for Earth and Planetary Materials Science” supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan. We offer opportunities to access our facilities and expertise in order to promote materials science research by taking full advantage of our facilities for chemical analysis, dating, and structural analysis of terrestrial and extraterrestrial materials and experiments under a range of PT conditions. If you are interested in collaborative research with us, please contact the relevant faculty members. For a complete list and further information, please visit the Joint-Use webpage.
◆Master's and Doctor's courses
We have started Master's (2 years) and Doctor's (3 years) courses from this year. We look for highly motivated young students to join our graduate program, which is aimed at fostering the next generation of leaders in the international Earth and planetary science community. We have had many international students and produced outstanding graduates. For international students, lectures and guidance in research will be provided in English as needed. ◆Misasa International Student Intern Program(MISIP)
The annual Misasa International Student Intern Program (MISIP) for advanced undergraduate and Master students is being held each summer for about 6 weeks in order to promote international collaborative research and education. During the intern program, each student work on an active IPM research project under the supervision of IPM faculty members and staffs. Earth and Planetary Science covers various fields: solid Earth, atmosphere and ocean, surface environments including biosphere, planets and minor objects in the solar system, and space beyond the solar system. Furthermore, it covers a wide range of time span from the evolution of the solar system to the future of the Earth system and various timescales from billion years to hours or shorter. Diverse research methods are thus required in such a wide variety of research fields: field work, observation, laboratory experiments, chemical analyses, theoretical modeling, simulations and so on. Recent progress in Earth and planetary science to understand the large-scale complex entire Earth or planetary system requires interdisciplinary research and education on the basis of strong programs in the various disciplines in this field.
We reorganized the four departments, Earth and Planetary Physics, Geology, Mineralogy, and Geography, into the Department of Earth and Planetary Science in 2000 both for the enhanced research across the breadth of earth and planetary science and for more flexible and effective graduate and undergraduate education.
The five core research groups in the department, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science, Space and Planetary Science, Earth and Planetary System Science, Solid, and Earth Science, Geosphere and Biosphere Science, are in cooperation with each other as well as with affiliated institutions* to be the core institute for both research and education in Earth Planetary Science in Japan. (*The affiliated institutions in the University of Tokyo are the Ocean Research Institute, the Earthquake Research Institute, the Institute of Solid State Physics, the Center for Climate System Research, the Center for Spatial Information Science, the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, the University Museum, the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Laboratory for Earthquake Chemistry, the Department of Astronomy and the Department of Physics. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, both of which are not the institutions in the University of Tokyo, are also in partnership with us.)
The educational program aims to train doctoral-level researchers who can become leading figures in their respective fields and masters-level students and undergraduates who will take a variety of positions in government, industry, and education, where it is hoped that they will be able to make significant contributions to society.
Another important objective of the department is to contribute directly to society through participation in national and international programs of applied research in areas such as global climate change or mitigating earthquake hazards.
