Selective hydrogenation of fatty carboxylic acids has attracted much attention as a simple method for the synthesis of fatty alcohols. However, the reaction is difficult due to the low reactivity of the carboxy group, and high temperatures are generally required to achieve adequate activity. The development of an effective heterogeneous catalyst is highly required to obtain high yields of desired alcohols at low temperatures (<473 K). Here, we found that Ru-FeOx/SiO2 with a Fe/Ru ratio of 0.4 was an effective and reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the hydrogenation of carboxylic acids at a low reaction temperature of 413 K, yielding the alcohols in up to 98%.
