In fields such as polyolefin catalytic cracking, the external surface of zeolites plays an important role. We found that the acid sites on the external surface are inactivated by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of silica. On the other hand, the type, amount (number), and strength of the acid sites can be measured by ammonia infrared/mass spectrometry temperature-programmed desorption (IRMS-TPD). Therefore, by combining these techniques, we developed a method to measure the type, amount (number), and strength of the acid sites in the micropores and on the external surface.
