We have succeeded in synthesizing well-defined tungsten complexes, which are suitable for the production of dicyclopentadiene molding resin by reaction injection molding. These tungsten complexes were air-stable compounds that could be synthesized in a one-pot reaction on a 30-gram scale in almost quantitative yield with very high purity. A traditional tungsten catalyst for the dicyclopentadiene molding resin, which has been used industrially for approximately 40 years, was also found to be a complex mixture of various types of tungsten species of unknown structure.
