The oxidative coupling of arenes and carboxylic acids is an efficient reaction affording aryl esters in a single step. When using molecular oxygen as the oxidant, the only byproduct is water. In this study, we found that PtRu oxide clusters exhibited synergistically enhanced catalytic activity for the coupling of benzene and acetic acid under oxygen atmosphere. The pure Pt catalyst showed higher activity than the Ru catalyst, while the PtRu catalyst showed the product yield ~2 times higher than that by the Pt catalyst. We elucidated the origin of the synergistic catalysis by structural analysis, kinetic measurements, and theoretical calculations.
