In welding performed in sulfide stress cracking (SSC) environments, the maximum allowable hardness is specified depending on the material to prevent cracking. Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is commonly applied to satisfy this requirement; however, when the volume of piping construction is large, PWHT can significantly affect the construction schedule. In this study, mock-up tests were conducted for piping work to evaluate whether weld locations requiring PWHT can be distinguished from those that can be managed by alternative measures, such as optimization of welding conditions. Based on these results, the applicability of selective PWHT was examined. This presentation reports the ongoing efforts and findings at the Chiba Complex.
