With the heat exchanger replacement, the increased equipment weight made foundation reinforcement necessary.
Under normal circumstances, the unit would be shut down and placed in a safe condition before excavation and foundation work were carried out. However, because the scheduled shutdown maintenance (SDM) period was short, it was strongly desirable from the standpoint of improving productivity to perform the foundation work in advance while the unit remained in operation. On the other hand, foundation work during operation involves safety risks. To address this issue, a connected H-beam reinforcement method that does not require excavation was studied and successfully implemented. This method was the first of its kind within Idemitsu, and it delivered significant results in every aspect, including schedule reduction (improved operating availability), cost savings, ensured safety, and compliance with regulatory restrictions under the High Pressure Gas Safety Act and the Fire Service Act.
