Conversion of syngas to methyl acetate and acetic acid was studied using tandem catalysts, which were composed of a Cu-based methanol synthesis catalyst and a zeolite-based DME carbonylation catalyst. In this study, loading effects of Ag on MOR were systematically studied. Loading 12.0 wt% of Ag by means of and ion exchange method exhibited the 44 times as high total yield of methyl acetate and acetic acid as the unmodified mordenite. Characterization of the catalysts using various techniques indicated that the metallic Ag clusters present within the micropores of mordenite exhibited a unique CO adsorption property, resulting in high catalytic activity for DME carbonylation.
