Direct CO2 hydrogenation to ethanol is a promising emerging technology for transforming CO2 into valuable chemicals. However, it remains challenging due to low ethanol selectivity and catalytic stability. Recently, we demonstrated that the combination of Rh and MoOx enables low temperature CO2 hydrogenation to ethanol. This study further investigated the effect of modifying this catalyst with alkali metals. We propose that the Li and Na modifications moderately suppressed the excessive hydrogenation of the adsorbed CO2 species. This facilitated the production of ethanol through a hetero-coupling reaction between the CHx and CO species.
