Visible-light-driven oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) was achieved using commercially available TiO2 as a photocatalyst without the addition of external oxidants such as H2O2 or O2 bubbling. Under ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, DBT in model fuel was efficiently oxidized to dibenzothiophene sulfoxide and sulfone, which were subsequently removed by ethanol extraction. Among the TiO2 catalysts examined, anatase TiO2, especially JRC-TIO-10, exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity. Further investigations revealed that solvent-derived oxidized species enhanced the visible-light absorption of TiO2. Radical trapping experiments suggested that •OH was the main active species, while •O2- also contributed to the oxidation mechanism.
