The mechanism of the phenomenon of frictional electrification of insulators is not well understood and various models have been proposed. Electron transfer models suggest that electrification is caused by the transfer of charge to the in-gap levels that exist in the forbidden band. In this study, intra-gap levels were measured using high-sensitivity UV photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrostatic simulations were performed in combination with the electrostatic model of M. Oehzelt et al. The results show that sufficient amount of intra-gap levels exist to discuss the electron transfer model.
