Graphite interlayer compounds (GICs) of alkali metals (AM) and alkaline earth metals (AE) have been synthesized by vapor phase or molten salt methods, but these methods have not been suitable for GIC applications. We have developed a method to synthesize AM(AE)-GIC by simply adding Na to the raw materials of GIC (graphite and AM(AE)) and mixing at room temperature or heating at 250°C for several hours. This method enables simple and rapid synthesis of large amounts of GICs.
