We have proposed a solar-pumped laser that does not require any focusing devices. This is achieved by combining an Nd3+ active fiber with a fluorescent solar collector (LSC). The liquid dye solution in the previous device has been replaced by a solid-state dye, and the dual confinement scheme using total internal reflection at the LSC surface and the dielectric multilayer mirrors have been employed. The experiment was performed under natural sunlight. We achieved a maximum output power of 15 mW, an optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of 0.023%, and a collection efficiency of 0.21 W/m2. This was a twelvefold improvement over the previous record.
