Ants use pheromones to change their environment and, in turn, their own behavior. This kind of interaction is called “stigmergy“, enabling ants swarm to complete many tasks. To understand and utilize this “swarm intelligence”, we implemented the stigmergy process into an active colloidal system and this allows us to investigate the intelligence on a laboratory scale. Moreover, the interaction among the particles is tunable, therefore multiple states of collective behavior emerged.
