Surface of ice plays important roles in the various phenomena in the nature. However, its structure at atomic scale is still unclear. In this work, we carried out the analysis of atomic-scale structure of ice-I surface by atomic force microscopy. We revealed that H atom in water molecules show local 2 x 2 periodicity and the surface is distorted relative to the ideal surface. These features are intrinsic for ice-I surface because these always appear independent of the thickness, structure in the bulk, and the substrate.
