Josephson plasma emitters (JPEs) are superconducting terahertz sources that emit terahertz-band continuous light due to the AC Josephson effect and cavity resonance effect by applying a DC voltage to a rectangular resonator consisting of a stacked Josephson junction system. We show that the JPE can be simulated using a commercial FDTD simulator by applying appropriate linearization (effective medium approximation) to the mathematical model of the JPE described by the coupled sine-Gordon equation.
