AFM can measure electrical, mechanical, and other properties on the nanoscale for conductive and nonconductive samples. On the other hand, the optical pump-probe method can measure ultrafast phenomena. We have combined these two methods and developed time resolved FMAFM using delay time modulation. Delay time modulation can minimize the effect of probe thermal expansion, which has been an issue in previous research. Using this method, we conducted time-resolved measurements on a GaAs(110) cleaved surface and succeeded in obtaining a lifetime of about 60 ns from exponential fitting.
