Surface electronic state of semiconductor photocatalysts, in particular, the valence band maximum (VBM) is an important factor for photocatalytic oxidation. For the semiconductor photocatalysts in aqueous solution, electric charge of functional groups and adsorbates on the surface of the photocatalysts often affects the VBM of the photocatalysts at the interface with water. However, evaluation of the VBM in solution is not easy. In this study, the surface VBM of α-Fe2O3 dispersed in water was measured using a photoemission yield spectroscopy in air (PYSA). The effects of pH and phenols as photocatalytic decomposition reactants on the VBM of α-Fe2O3 were investigated.
