Coal-based pitch becomes a carbon body via a liquid crystal phase called mesophase. Mesophase is magnetically oriented, and it has been suggested that highly oriented carbon bodies can suppress graphite synthesis energy. The ratio of carbon crystallites to molten components is then necessary to optimize magnetic orientation; annealing at 353 K suggests volatilization of low molecular weight components. The optimum holding time for magnetic orientation was found to be 15-30 min.
