The dye molecule MTT permeates the cell membrane and undergoes a redox reaction with metabolism-related substances produced in living cells, where it is converted into the insoluble MTT formazan. In this study, the electrochemical response of MTT in bacterial suspensions was used to estimate the number of viable cells in the samples. In addition, dark-field microscopy was used to evaluate formazan formation in single cells by spectroscopic analysis. The possibility of evaluating the activity in living cells was thus discussed.
