Highly fluorescent and flexible optical waveguides composed of π-conjugated molecules are expected to be applied for organic photonics such as flexible optical waveguides. The flexibility derives from the slipping of intermolecular face-to-face π-stacking when the mechanical stress is applied to the crystals while the crystal framework is maintained. However, the packing motif easily induces excimer formation, resulting in low fluorescence quantum efficiency (ΦPL). To overcome this problem, we designed a molecule substituted by benzofuran referring a model molecule with thiophene substituents, which has been utilized as a flexible organic single crystal. As a result, we obtained flexible organic single crystal with ΦPL higher than 50% for the first time.
