MTT, a type of tetrazolium salt, permeates cell membranes and is reduced to insoluble MTT formazan by metabolism-related substances produced in living cells. In this study, we focused on the electrochemical response of MTT in bacterial suspensions and succeeded in estimating the number of viable cells from the magnitude of their redox current. The possibility of evaluating the enzyme activity of single cells was also discussed by spectroscopic analysis using microscopic observation.
