The purpose of our research is to spectroscopically observe the aggregation process of proteins with nanoscale resolution. Deposition of amyloid fibrils formed by protein misfolding is a cause of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, but the process of amyloid fibril formation is still unknown. We have demonstrated super-resolution imaging of amyloid fibrils by near-field infrared absorption spectroscopy with a wavelength-swept quantum cascade laser, and have shown that this technique is useful for structural analysis of amyloid fibrils.
