When organic molecules spontaneously adsorb on various surfaces, a film as little as one molecule thick is formed. Such nanoscale self-assembled monolayers (SAM films) are widely used to design surfaces with well-defined properties. In this talk, we will present our research results on the characterization of SAM film surfaces at the molecular level using scanning probe microscopy.
