A novel wave machine was developed for visualization of propagation and reflection of a longitudinal wave which are more difficult to understand intuitively compared to those of a transverse wave. Metal slabs representing mass elements were mobilized via roller bearings and connected with springs representing elastic elements to accomplish a propagation velocity observable with a naked eye. Reflections at fixed and free ends were also reproduced well. A device to convert a longitudinal displacement to a transverse-like one was also developed.
