In this study, we investigated the decomposition behavior of glucose in solution plasma, a clean technology for biomass conversion. Our previous work suggested that glucose is selectively oxidized to a dialdose by abundant OH radicals generated in aqueous solution plasma. In the present study, the structure of the resulting dialdose was elucidated by detailed chemical analysis. This selective formation of a dialdose via aqueous-phase oxidation represents an uncommon reaction pathway and highlights the unique potential of solution plasma in carbohydrate transformation.
