Thorium-229,Nuclear Clock

Thorium-229 (229Th) is a laser-excitable nucleus with an extremely low first excitation level of about 8.4 eV and has potential applications as a nuclear clock. In this study, we have developed a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) pulsed laser using four-wave mixing in Xe gas, and have performed laser excitation experiments using 229Th:CaF2 crystal as a target. In this talk, we will report on the current status of the laser spectroscopy experiments, as well as the design and performance of the developed VUV laser and detection system.
