Hot carriers can be generated by applying a voltage across tunnel junctions. Chemical reactions induced by tunnel-junction-based hot carriers have been largely limited to those induced by a microscopic probing system called a scanning tunneling microscope. Because its microscopic nature hinders actual applications, this study aimed to scale up the hot-carrier reaction system using thin-film-based tunnel junctions based on atomic layers. In this talk, we will introduce our achievements in the room-temperature induction of the dissociation of lower alkanes.
