Water exhibits a number of anomalous properties, including maximum density at 4 °C. We have demonstrated that these anomalies stem from the two-state nature of liquid water, where locally ordered tetrahedral structures dynamically coexist with disordered ones. We also found that the criticality of the hypothesized liquid–liquid transition has little impact on the physical properties of real liquid water. These anomalies are thus attributed to the additional degree of freedom arising from this two-state character. Details will be presented in the talk.
