To understand earthquakes and volcanoes, it is important to reveal the crustal structure around them. Crustal resistivity structure surveys using electromagnetic waves are sensitive to small amounts of fluid in the crust and its connections. This talk will present our research results using a natural signal called the magnetotelluric (MT) method. The heterogeneous fluid structure in the crust dominates the dynamics of earthquake occurrence for interplate and inland earthquakes. Magma and crustal fluids distribution has also been revealed for volcanoes in the Northeast Japan Arc and a rift zone in Antarctica.
