The angle between the direction of the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric material and the normal of the parallel plate type metal/ferroelectric/metal (MFM) capacitor is an important parameter for polarization switching phenomena. From a geometric consideration focusing on that angle, we derived the formulas, as a function of that angle, both for the electric field required for polarization reversal and for the coercive electric field of the MFM capacitor. By comparing the results from the geometric consideration with numerical simulation results based on the EKAI model, we were able to validate the adequacy of the geometric approach.
