We found that metallic metastructures are a good photocathode. Metallic metastructures resonate with the periodic electric field of near-infrared light, exciting surface plasmons, which are collective oscillations of free electrons. Surface plasmons generate a localized surface electric field, which efficiently induces photoelectric effect. Furthermore, the metal metastructure features a narrow energy width of approximately 40 meV, making it an electron beam source suitable for focusing.
