We discuss the interface energy level alignment of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) hole transport layers that demonstrate high performance in inverted perovskite solar cells. While numerous SAM materials have been developed, a common understanding of their energy level alignment has not been established. We propose that the heterojunction model for inorganic semiconductor can be applied to the SAM/perovskite interface. Furthermore, we identify the key factors determining the work function and ionization energy of SAM which are critical parameters in this model. This provides guidelines for selecting and developing suitable SAM hole transport materials.
