Surface modification of Nafion polymer electrolyte membranes by atomic hydrogen annealing (AHA) was investigated. XPS spectra showed that AHA reduced the concentration of O and S atoms and the -SO₃^- peak on the Nafion surface. However, Raman spectra showed no change due to AHA. AHA preferentially reduced the number of perfluorinated side chains and modified the local surface of Nafion.
